On a Wednesday evening in a seminar room at the Faculty of Engineering, a group of students gathered together over pizza and coke. One by one, they stood up in front of their peers and delivered a pitch. The range of topics was broad: an idea for virtual hot-pots, the possibilities of space travel using lasers, the benefits of weightlifting, to name only a few. For entrepreneurs, making a successful business pitch is a core skill. But for these students, skill development is only part of the equation.

A team from the School of Architecture’s Minimum Cost Housing Group (MCHG) has won a prestigious National Design Award for its unique project repurposing discarded materials in the northern village of Kuujjuaq to design and build an outdoor sports pavilion and enhance a central public space. The announcement was made on Oct. 18.

��ñ�� today announces it will co-develop with Xebec Adsorption Inc. (TSXV: XBC) a prototype reactor to produce Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) using the Power-to-Gas (P2G) process which combines electricity generated by renewable sources and CO2 generated from waste. The project is being partially funded by a Collaborative Research and Development grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The value of the grant is $360,000 for a period of three years.

MONTREAL, October 3, 2018 –ArcelorMittal Mining Canada G.P. announced today a long-term funding programme to support mining and materials engineering R&D in the Faculty of Engineering at ��ñ��. The strategic partnership pledges to provide $360,000 over four years to create the ArcelorMittal Mining and Mineral Processing Fund, which will finance research projects and program development in the University’s Mining Engineering Program.

After more than two years of hard work, Canada’s sole entry in the 2018 Solar Decathlon competition has won first prize in the Architecture; Market Appeal; and Communications contests with thirds in the Innovation and Engineering contests making TeamMTL the biggest winner in the expert review juries. The collaborative effort between students and faculty from ��ñ�� and Concordia University competed against 22 teams from 38 schools and 10 countries to construct the best solar-powered house.

Nano-sized traps show promise in diagnosing pathogenic bacterial infections

A new type of “lab on a chip” developed by ��ñ�� scientists has the potential to become a clinical tool capable of detecting very small quantities of disease-causing bacteria in just minutes.

The device designed by Sara Mahshid, Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at ��ñ��, is made of nano-sized “islands,” about one tenth of the thickness of a single human hair, which act as bacterial traps or snares.

NSERC awards $9.9M to ��ñ��-led research projects

On August 10, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) announced the recipients of the 2018 NSERC Strategic Partnership Grants program. Eight ��ñ��-led projects are receiving more than $4.4 million to collaborate with a supporting organization on strategic research in hopes of enhancing Canada’s economy, society, and environment within the next 10 years.
