However\, for man y spatio-temporal modeling purposes\, such an account of validity is insuf ficient. Not only is ground truth often unavailable\, data-driven approach es also fail to account for fictive modeling scenarios as well as for vari ous purposes of modeling. Yet\, the validity of geographic modeling is ind ispensible in the age of hallucinating AI. Valid methods make science ”sci entific”\, while invalid methods are bound to deliver falsehoods. Given th is central role in science\, it is somewhat surprising to find that validi ty remains a rather obscure concept. In this talk\, I take a pragmatic (ac tion-based) approach to the validity of spatio-temporal models\, which I c all Protogeography. I argue that spatio-temporal models are valid only by delivering a valid answer to a particular kind of spatio-temporal question \, corresponding to its information purpose. Questions are about experimen ts including spatio-temporal controls and measures. The latter constitute the information purposes of models. Answers are valid if they fit this pur pose and the underlying experiments are successful. I discuss a correspond ing question-based grammar to formally distinguish among predictions\, ret rodictions\, projections\, and retrojective models. Based on various examp les from geography\, I show how the grammar can be used to understand the purposes and validity concerns about various spatio-temporal model applica tions.\n  \n DTSTART:20240913T160000Z DTEND:20240913T170000Z LOCATION:Room 426\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Simon Scheider (Utrecht University) - Protogeography: validity of s patio-temporal models as a means to answer questions URL:/geography/channels/event/simon-scheider-utrecht-u niversity-protogeography-validity-spatio-temporal-models-means-answer-3582 64 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
