In an era dominated by experimental models that focus on external processe s\, the study of internal cognition faces a unique challenge: how can inne r experience be measured and attributed to neural signals? In this lecture \, Julia Kam will discuss the neurophysiological basis of internal attenti on\, drawing on paradigms designed to tackle this challenge in combination with scalp and intracranial EEG recordings. She will review work highligh ting internal attention broadly\, including the switching between attentio n states and the specific thought content engaged during internal attentio n. Kam will also introduce ongoing clinically oriented research examining cognitive states that can modulate interictal epileptiform discharges.\n\n Julia Kam\n\nDepartment of Psychology\, Hotchkiss Brain Institute\, Univer sity of Calgary\n\n\n\nJulia Kam is an Associate Professor of Psychology a nd a full member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Cal gary. She completed her PhD at the University of British Columbia and trai ned as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California\, Berkeley. H er lab aims to develop a mechanistic model of the neural basis of internal attention\, which will ultimately drive the development of tools that opt imize attentional control. In particular\, the lab studies how the human b rain processes internal representations and aims to translate this researc h to applied and clinical contexts\, including predicting attention states in the real world and studying this in psychiatric and neurological popul ations.\n\n\nThese seminar series are made possible through the sponsorshi p of:\n\n\n\n \n DTSTART:20251023T200000Z DTEND:20251023T210000Z LOCATION:de Grandpre Communications Centre\, The Neuro SUMMARY:Neuro Epilepsy Lecture Series: The Neurophysiological Basis of Inte rnal Attention URL:/medhealthsci/channels/event/neuro-epilepsy-lectur e-series-neurophysiological-basis-internal-attention-367140 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
