Isabel Wilkerson to deliver the 2025 Beatty Lecture

Isabel Wilkerson, Pulitzer Prize winner and bestselling author of Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents and The Warmth of Other Suns will deliver the 2025 Beatty Lecture at ��ñ�� on Oct. 23 during the University’s annual Homecoming festivities. Nahlah Ayed, host of CBC national radio program Ideas, will moderate the event.

The Government of Canada invests $51 million in ��ñ�� research

Yesterday, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, and the Honourable Marjorie Michel, Minister of Health, announced over $1.3 billion in funding to support over 9,700 researchers and research projects across Canada. Included are 253 ��ñ�� projects, resulting in just over $51 million in funding to ��ñ�� research. This major investment includes funding through several key federal research programs:

NSERC invests $35.6 million in ��ñ�� research

Today the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) announced a record-breaking $660 million investment in discovery research, marking NSERC’s biggest annual investment through its Discovery Research Programs. Included in this milestone investment are 148 ��ñ�� research projects that received a combined total of $35.6 million in funding across several program streams, including Discovery Grants, Discovery Launch Supplements, Research Tools and Instruments Grants, and Subatomic Physics Discovery Grants.

��ñ�� Professor Simon Caron-Huot awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship

Simon Caron-Huot, Professor and Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics, has been awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship. The prestigious fellowship is awarded by the Killam Trusts. Eight Fellowships were awarded across the country.

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship provides researchers with up to two years of relief from teaching and administrative duties to focus on transformative research that has potential to positively improve Canadian lives.

��ñ�� congratulates Alain Brunet, winner of the Prix Acfas Léo-Pariseau 2023 for biological and health sciences, which was awarded at the 79th Acfas Gala held last night at the Port of Montreal's Pavillon du Grand Quai. Congratulations also go to Anja Geitmann, who receives the "La Preuve par l'Image" award, which is chosen by public vote.

The Prix Acfas Léo-Pariseau is named in honour of Léo Pariseau, radiologist and first President of Acfas. It is awarded to a researcher in recognition of the excellence and influence of his or her work in the biological or health sciences.

Alanis Obomsawin offers message of optimism at Beatty Lecture

On October 16, 2023, Alanis Obomsawin delivered the 69th annual Beatty Lecture at Pollack Hall on ��ñ��’s downtown campus. As the room fell dark her soft voice recalled her childhood, leaving everyone in the audience to paint in their own mind a picture of her early life. She recounted how she spent part of her childhood in Odanak, an Abenaki reserve near Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. “Odanak was very different then, there was no electricity or running water,” she reflected.
