Accessible Course Materials

Creating accessible course materials provides greater access to all students, and ensures equal access for students with visual, auditory, cognitive or motor impairments.聽

Our Document Accessibility Guide:聽PDF icon Best Practices for Document Accessibility is a resource designed specifically for course instructors that shares best practices on creating accessible course materials. It includes:聽

  • Information on what digital accessibility is and its benefits
  • Constraints that might be faced by people with disabilities who utilize assistive technologies
  • Step-by-step instructions for formatting documents
  • Tips for using headers, alt text, and reading order to make materials more accessible

Reasonable Consideration Requests

Reasonable Consideration Requests communicate aspects of a student鈥檚 accommodation plan that require your knowledge and collaboration.聽 If you receive one of these notifications from our office, then your student has an active academic accommodation plan with Student Accessibility and Achievement and we have valid medical documentation on file.

Based on the student鈥檚 needs and approved supports, the notification email will confirm whether the student may:

  • Need to be absent from courses throughout the semester for valid disability-related reasons
  • Approach you to negotiate deadline extensions on course work
  • Require聽advanced access to course materials
  • Require聽permission to record lectures (audio only)
  • Require聽the use of a laptop in class

Next Steps

If you receive a Reasonable Consideration Request, we encourage you to:

  1. Start a conversation with your student to discuss what support is needed.
  2. Develop an agreement with your student. Agreement templates are available below. The agreement will establish expectations and responsibilities聽of both parties, as well as聽limitations.
