Call for student applications open for the 2025-2026 competition

Coordination of the Community of emergent research in Montréal studies

CIRM is seeking applications to coordinate the brand new Community of emergent research in Montréal studies, a program dedicated to new research. The call is open to doctoral students from any university whose thesis focuses on Montréal studies and who are supervised by a CIRM faculty member.

From October 2025 to October 2026, two students, ideally from different disciplines, will have the opportunity to design and lead a series of activities for their peers: conferences, workshops, writing sessions, reading circles, podcast production, film screenings and discussions, field trips, etc. These are just a few ideas, as everything is yet to be imagined and built: the Community of emergent research in Montréal studies is a new initiative, open to experimentation. The goal is to create a stimulating, interdisciplinary, and collaborative space to explore issues related to urban life or the city of Montréal and its neighborhoods.

The coordinators will be responsible for building the Community by recruiting a group of students from all three university levels. The two people selected will each receive a $2,500 scholarship for the duration of the program and will be able to occupy a workspace at CIRM (680 Sherbrooke Street West, 8th floor).

This experience represents an excellent opportunity for professional development: it will allow participants to build a network, enrich their academic record, and demonstrate their organizational, facilitation, and leadership skills.

Students interested in coordinating the Community are invited to send the following items in a single file to the scientific coordinator, stephan.gervais [at] mcgill.ca (Stéphan Gervais), by Sunday, September 21, 2025:

  • their resume;
  • an unofficial transcript;
  • a cover letter (maximum two pages):
    • describing their interest in the project and their vision for the Community;
    • specifying the types of activities they would like to propose;
    • explaining the distribution of roles among Community members;
    • highlighting how they would exercise their autonomy and leadership;
  • a letter of recommendation from their CIRM supervisor (sent directly to Stéphan Gervais).

The selection of the two coordinators will be carried out by the CIRM management team and will be based on the following criteria:

  • Academic excellence;
  • Interest and ability to work in an interdisciplinary, intersectoral, and team environment;
  • Leadership and community involvement;
  • Sufficient proficiency in French and English to actively participate in bilingual discussions and activities.

Interviews will take place during the week of September 21, and results will be announced the following week.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contactÌýstephan.gervais [at] mcgill.ca (Stéphan Gervais) or felycia.thibaudeau [at] mcgill.ca (Félycia Thibaudeau).
