How to Apply for the Post-Graduation Work Permit?

  1. As of June 21st, 2024, international students can no longer apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) at the border. Students should instead apply online.

Applying Online

Case 1: Apply from Within Canada:

  1. Determine your eligibility to apply online for the PGWP by completing the .
  2. Once you have generated the work permit application and your personal reference code, login into your  to apply.
  3. Assemble your documents according to your personalized IRCC document checklist, fill out the validate the IMM5710 form and follow the subsequent steps.

Once you have applied from inside Canada and are waiting to receive your PGWP, you can begin to work full-time only if:

  1. you hold or held a valid study permit at the time you applied for your PGWP, 
  2. you maintained a full-time student status every semester with the exception of your last term, and
  3. you never worked more hours than you were allowed to during your studies

Your study permit becomes invalid 90 days after completion of studies ´Ç°ùÌýthe day on which it expires, whichever comes first, as per 

Case 2: Apply from Outside Canada:

Please note that (Work permit from outside Canada) will vary by country

  1. Determine your eligibility to apply online for the PGWP by completing the .
  2. Once you have generated the work permit application and your personal reference code, login into your  to apply.
  3. Assemble your documents according to your personalized IRCC document checklist, fill out the validate the IMM1295 form and follow the subsequent steps.

Your study permit must have been valid at some point within the 180 days after you received proof of program completion to be eligible to apply for the study permit. If your study permit expired before you received proof of program completion, please contact ISS for advice.

If you have applied using the outside of Canada:

  1. You will receive a when your PGWP is approved,
  2. You must bring your Letter of Introduction with you upon returning to Canada so that your PGWP can be issued at the port-of-entry.
  3. If you are inside Canada when you receive your Letter of Introduction, you will need to leave Canada and return to be issued the PGWP at the port-of-entry.
