Locking your bike: tips to prevent theft

Using a sturdy, high-quality U-lock (also called a D-lock) is one of the best ways to protect your bike from theft. These locks, available at most sporting goods stores, or online review lists are made of hardened steel that is difficult to cut, yet compact enough to fit in your bag or basket. If your bike has (i.e., no bolt through the wheel hub), use a cable or chain in addition to your U-lock to secure the front wheel to the frame. For added protection, especially when leaving your bike overnight or in quieter areas, lock a cable through both wheels.

Bike theft is unfortunately common in Montreal, but with the right lock and smart parking habits, you can greatly reduce your risk.

Please do not lock your bike on...

  • Railings/gates - these can impede the accessibility of the site by those with mobility impairmentsÌýÌý

  • Trees – to avoid causing damage to the treeÌý

  • Construction fencing - these must remain movable at all times to provide an emergency exit for construction workersÌý
