Research curriculum within the MDCM Program

Research is integrated throughout the MDCM program to foster critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and evidence-based practice. Students engage in both scholarly activities and formal training in research methods:

1. Various scholarly activities included throughout the curriculum, e.g. Journal clubs, EBM small groups and assignments

2. Formal courses focusing on research: Research Fundamentals 1 and 2 offered during the Fundamentals of Medicine and Dentistry (FMD) component.

  • RF 1 focuses on the elaboration of a research proposal. While the course objective is to produce this proposal, students can certainly approach faculty members to see if their research proposal could be carried out!
  • RF 2 focuses on the analysis and potential application of research results. This course allows the student to look at research results from the lens of both the researcher and the evidence-based clinician.

3. Research electives: During Clerkship, 2-4 weeks research electives are available to students. More information is available on the Electives webpage.

Extra-curricular research opportunities

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is a research-intensive and leading institution in this domain. Faculty members welcome students to join their research projects.

The FMHS Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs Office coordinates funding and support for research projects, including:

Summer Research Bursary Program
  • Eight consecutive weeks of full-time research during the summer (June–August)

  • Standard stipend: $3,200

  • Students are expected to engage directly in the scientific process beyond data collection

  • Participants may present their work at the annual Student Research Day

Fall and Winter Bursary Program
  • Support for 12 weeks of part-time research

  • Standard stipend: $2,000

  • Enables students to continue summer research or begin new part-time projects

Summer Anatomy Prosection Program

A research-intensive project providing hands-on anatomical learning opportunities, available in both Montreal and Campus Outaouais.More information is available on this webpage: Anatomy Prosection Program | Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies - ñ

Research in Campus Outaouais

Campus Outaouais (CO) students have access to the same opportunities as Montreal-based students, as well as local options.

CO Local Research Support

  • CO students can receive research matching support through the Direction de l’Enseignement, des Relations Universitaires et de la Recherche (DERUR).

  • Locally developed research proposals may be eligible for inclusion in the Summer Research Bursary Program.

  • CO students may participate in both a local CO Research Day and the CISSSO Research Day. Students are also encouraged to participate in “Les midis de la relève” organized by the CISSSO Research Centre, offering a platform where students can present research results of projects they are involved in.

  • CO students are also welcome to contact Montreal-based researchers.
